Severe Eye Problems
One of the complications of diabetes is called diabetic retinal neurodegeneration, which means the back of the eye, where light forms images, becomes thinner, and loses nerve function. When this happens, the eye cannot send images to the brain. New research shows that these complications can be predicted at least in part by the presence of other complications, which allows doctors to know which people with diabetes are most vulnerable.
In August 2017, the journal Acta Diabetology published the results of a study conducted at Kyung He, University Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. One hundred and sixty-two people with type 2 diabetes who had the condition for more than 15 years were carefully examined and their eyes were photographed. Result...- blood pressure
- diabetic retinopathy
- statins
- kidney function
- nerve function in the legs
- heart failure
All of the above are related to retinal thinning. In particular, the branches and functions of the heart nerve are more closely related to retinal detachment.
The researchers concluded that the slowing of nerve activity increased the risk of retinal thinning.
Diabetes is fraught with potential complications. Therefore, it is important to get the situation under control before complicated signs and symptoms appear. As scientists continue to discover compounding problems, doctors can better know which ones to look out for.
